Launched in 2010, Social Media Day has now reached its fifth anniversary year and while Americans want to make it a national holiday, more and more countries are celebrating it as well.
Social Media Day was launched by Mashable on June 30 in 2010 in recognition of the social digital revolution, What started as meet up events has transformed into a global celebration to bring people together, just like social media has!
In the United States, over 30 cities officially celebrate Social Media Day on June 30, with Arizona being the first state to recognise it. Mashable is promoting the days by asking its users to make Social Media Day official in their cities. Check out their how to submit a proclamation request form.
Other countries like Australia, Costa Rica, Sri Lanka, India and Honduras are participating by organising social media events. Everyone in every country can celebrate it by organising events and using the hashtag #smday on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+ or any other social network. Currently, the Mashable meet up community has gathered 32,954 members from 1,757 cities and the goal is to encourage interaction and discussions about this amazing phenomenon that is social media.
In Ireland, it seems that Cork has the biggest community to celebrates this new holiday with a dedicated Facebook page setup for the event. Anyone who wants to host or organise a Social Media Day event can join the Mashable Meetup Organisers group on Facebook and sign up on the Mashable Meetup Everywhere page. In Dublin, the community has 114 members and you can join it here.
